Sorry, Rough Riders. The 50th Reunion of the TRHS Class of 1970 is officially postponed until sometime next year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The reunion committee recognizes that holding a physical group reunion while the SARS-CoV-2 virus is still active would jeopardize the health and safety of all of our classmates and their families. It will be much safer to gather once there is an effective vaccine against the virus, which health experts and scientists worldwide are working desperately to develop and produce.
Our hearts go out to all classmates who have been harmed by COVID-19. Please, let us know if we can help. To classmates who are working or volunteering on the front lines of the pandemic, please be safe and know that we salute you.
The necessary shutdowns across the county have inflicted hardships — physical, financial, and emotional — on everyone. To all who are separated from family and friends and loved ones, please know that you are not alone.
We’ll update this page periodically with news about plans for the 51st Reunion in 2021. In the meantime, stay in touch. Look over the “lost and found” page and help us track down unfound classmates. Send us your current news and photos and we’ll post them on the “Virtual Reunion” page.
We’ve lived through some interesting times, haven’t we? The Roosevelt High School Class of 1970 grew up in the shadow of the Cold War and the atomic bomb. We wondered if the world would end during the Cuban missile crisis. We came of age during the 1960s when it seemed society was coming apart at the seams. We survived disco.
The current COVID-19 pandemic appears likely to be the biggest
crisis we’ve yet faced, physically, financially, and emotionally. We’re all in the
high-risk category by virtue of age, and many of us have special
vulnerabilities that make potential infection especially scary. To all of you, please
stay safe, stay strong, and stay home as much as you can.
And stay in touch. In this time of self-isolation and social distancing, it’s important to remember that we are not alone. Please let us know how you are, and what you’re doing. Send me pictures. I’ll post your messages and photos here on a new Virtual Reunion page. (Maybe I’ll use this time in seclusion to learn how to post video messages too. I’ll have to ask our 9-year-old granddaughter for technical advice…)
As for the 50th reunion scheduled for Sept. 11-13, 2020, it is — for now — still on. However, it is possible that current stay-at-home and social distancing regulations could be extended six months or more. No one knows at this point. The reunion committee will monitor current events and government advisories, and, with everyone’s health and safety as the main concern, make the call whether to go ahead with the 50th reunion as planned or to postpone it until a safer and happier time.
The 50th Reunion of the Teddy Roosevelt High School Class of 1970 begins Friday evening, Sept. 11, 2020, at River Center in downtown Des Moines. Musical entertainment will be provided by Echos V, the band that played at the Class of 1970’s Senior Prom.
The Reunion Committee will meet again soon to plan additional activities for Saturday, Sept. 12, and Sunday, Sept. 13.
